J/Wata Temaki Bar
So this month's foodie highlight is J/Wata - you guys, I may have just found my favorite sushi spot in literally ALL of San Diego. And surprise surprise - it's in Convoy (of course, where all the best asian food here is) 😋
Right when you walk in, the place has a small intimate feel with animated murals and walls with bar seating surrounding the chef so you get to watch him do his magic. James is incredible! And everyone there is so courteous and friendly including the manager, Tom.
So you get to watch the chef hand make the hand rolls from scratch 🍙🍣 I personally think that's what makes J Wata so special - the freshness of it all 🙌🏼 The combination of the warm rice with chilled sushi grade fish and the crispy seaweed makes for one heck of a roll!
I don't know if there's something magical about this cooking stone or the combination of things that go into the hand rolls you guys, but these are the BEST hand rolls I've ever had.
But of course, first things first, you gotta have some miso soup.
I also tried their deep fried salmon cheese, which was to die for!
Back to the rolls - the chef prepares them all individually, so you get to enjoy and savor each hand roll from your Temaki set one by one. I had the "Go" set, which included:
1) Negi Salmon
2) Spicy Tuna
3) Hamachi Golden-Ratio Tare
4) Bay Scallop
5) Maine Lobster
Get this set when you go 😄 you won't be disappointed 👍🏼 Hehe it's my favorite not just because it has the most rolls of all the sets, but because they're ALL so good! And just for fun, I added a blue crab hand roll a la carte 🙊 I think I was definitely a little hungry 🤔
For size sake - here's how big the hand roll is 👆🏼
Also I got the Sake Sampler - which included the Superior, Demon Slayer and Kikisui. Oh and if you're a sake noob no worries - J Wata's got you covered - they have a Sake meter which tells you which ones are sweet, dry or neutral.
Also check out their happy hour menu - they've got some great deals 😋
Can't recommend this place enough! 😍🙌🏼
